Portugal Agrees To Take Guantanamo Detainees

The government of Portugal has agreed to help the Bush administration by accepting some of the Guantanamo prison inmates who fear being returned to their native land will result in torture or death. Foreign Minister, Luis Amado, urged: “the time has come for the European Union to step forward. As a matter of principle and coherence, we should send a clear signal of our willingness to help the US government in that regard, namely through the resettlement of detainees. As far as the Portuguese government is concerned, we will be available to participate.” American officials say many of the 60 who have been cleared fear persecution.

There is something wrong with this picture. SEVEN YEARS have gone by and now the Bush administration has finally “cleared” men who apparently never did anything wrong! It is the responsibility of the United States to provide sanctuary for these men if the Bush government has been unable to prove any wrong doing on their part. How about a program of rendition to any American official who was responsible for falsely charging innocent men with crimes? Hey, Bush, would you like to spend a few days in a Syrian prison getting interviewed?

Was Portugal Involved In US Rendition Program?

Neither the American people nor the world has yet to discover the extent of George Bush’s violation of fundamental human rights and, perhaps, we may never completely learn the facts of how he entered into a vast program of torturing people under the so-called Rendition program. The Spanish newspaper El Pais reported that Portugal was among several nations that was used by the CIA for the notorious program. Earlier this year, the British human rights group, Reprieve, charged the United States could not have illegally transported terrorist suspects between 2002 to 2006 without the assistance of Portugal. However, the Portuguese government denies there are any documents in its possession which prove the allegations.

Reprieve has documented that on at least 94 occasions planes crossed Portuguese airspace en route from Guantanamo Bay to destinations unknown. Portuguese Prime Minister Socrates insists his government was never consulted by American authorities on any program of flying across is nation’s airspace with men being in the Rendition program. The American people and the world will have to wait until an American government conducts an intensive investigation into the horror of what Bush terms, Rendition.

Domestic Violence Rises In Portugal

it is still unclear for the reasons, but domestic violence in Portugal has dramatically risen in 2008 over figures from 2007. There has been a 13.5% increase in cases of domestic violence which, for the most part, deal with male abuse of women. According to officials, there has been a significant rise in the number of physical attacks by men who are dating women, and there initial hypothesis is it may be linked to a feeling between couples that violence is part of love relationships. This week there is a new campaign entitled, “violence during dating” which seeks to make couples more aware that physical violence should not take place between two people who are dating.

The Women’s Union for Alternative Answers reports 43 cases of death resulting from physical violence involving a married couple. At this point, there is no clear explanation for this increase in domestic violence and one can not simply blame it on confusing economic conditions in Europe and the world.

Neo Nazi Sentenced To Jail In Portugal

Seventy years ago, Europe was engulfed in the worst war in its history when the Nazi regime of Adolf Hitler unleashed its forces on a bloody six years of violence and death. An estimated forty million Europeans died in the conflict, but, Hitler’s legacy lives on all over the continent in the form of neo-Nazi groups who are enraptured by the mad man of Germany. Mario Machado, leader of Portugal’s nationalist far right party, was sentenced to four years in prison for his vicious hatred toward people in his nation. He was also convicted of crimes such as serious coercion, owning an illegal weapon, intimidation, damage and assault to cause bodily harm.

Machado and thirty six others, who are connected to the skinhead movement were arrested in 2007for racism, kidnapping, aggression and possessing illegal weapons. The police found examples of anti-semitic materials in the homes of those who were convicted. Perhaps, some day, psychologists will be able to offer an understanding as to why there exists throughout Europe people like Machado who appear to adore Hitler. It is more than ignorance, it represents a deep psychological need to hurt and kill those who differ from one.
