It is relatively easy living in a modern society to poke fun at people in Burundi who fear witchcraft and the devil, but, the Republican candidate for vice president had herself blessed in order to ward off Satan himself. Americans can joke about the silly ceremony Governor Palin engaged in to cleanse herself of any taint of the Devil. However, in Burundi, an albino not only fears being the subject of jokes, but lives in constant fear of being killed and body parts sold to help others gain success. In recent weeks, there has been an outbreak of attacks that frequently lead to the death of someone who was born with light skin in an African society. Body parts are used by sorcerers to concoct potions to ward off the devil.
The story of the albinos and the murderous attacks on them reflect that in many parts of the world people are still trapped in medieval ways of thinking.
