Veterans for Peace, was initially granted a permit to particpate in the Memorial Day parade in Washngton, but after it was discovered the group planned to express political views, their scheduled march was cancelled. Members of the Veterans for Peace organization argued “we are a veterans group like any other except we have the word ‘peace’ in our name.” The American Veterans Center which organizes the parade claimed “we don’t allow groups in the parade that are projecting an opinon.”
The very essence of holding parades to commemorate Memorial Day is a political statement in itself. It is doubtful if President Bush made a speech praising efforts in Iraq that he would be denied the right to speak. Any comment in support of the current war is not “poitical” in the view of organizers of the parade. Unfortunately, those who fought for this nation will not be allowed to march.
