Hostility Remains In Baltics To Russians

Many people in eastern Europe celebrated the end of World War II and paid tribute to Russian soldiers who drove out the Germans. However, there are areas such as in the Baltic states where many people harbor hate toward Russia for seizing their lands and making them part of the Soviet Union. In Estonia, sculptures of Russian soldiers were spray painted red. The Russian Foreign Ministry accused Estonia of glorifying Nazism. “It is obvious that the attempts of the Estonian authorities to white wash Nazism and their henchmen are continuing with blatant disprespect for those who saved the world from fascism.”

In many areas of Estonia, people did come out to express admiration for the gallant
Russian army which did so much to gain victory against Nazi Germany. Russians must also understand the anger felt in Baltic nations at being conquered by the Soviet Union and forced to live in a communist society.
