Water, Water, Everywhere But In Mediterranean

Water is among the most important issues for nations that border the Mediterranean since many areas are experiencing drought and thus without access to water there might be significant changes in where people live. At the fourth Euro-Mediterranean Ministerial Conference on Water it became impossible to address issues due to use of words. The conference was an effort to secure agreement on a strategic plan to manage water resources and prevent this issue from preventing cooperation between nations that currently are antagonistic to one another. Issues were never resolved because a dispute arose over use of words like “occupied territories.”

President Sarkozy for years has been pushing for a Mediterranean Union which might serve the same basis for the region as the European Union has been for nations that once were deadly enemies. Economic cooperation on joint issues such as water offer hope that disputants can come together over a resource needed by all. Alas, words are more important than deeds for some people.
