Iraq War — A Mistake, Sort Of…

The British Labor Party lost the last election and it is time for its leaders to rehash how they ever wound up in the position of losing to the Conservatives and barely beating the Liberal Democrats. Tony Blair left a few years ago, Gordon Brown left a month ago, and now the race for power is in full swing. It appears those in contention to fill the vacated position of leader of the Labor Party are trying to establish their credential on the issue of– why did we go to war in 2003 against Saddam Hussein. Ed Miliband, who, along with his brother, David, is seeking to become head of Labor, announced why he was against the war, sort of. “As we all know, rthe basis for going to war was the basis of Saddam’s threat in terms of weapons of mass destruction and that is why I felt the weapons inspectors should have been given more time….” He also told the media, “what I am not saying is that the war was undertaken for the wrong motives.”

I gather you ARE saying more time was needed to find out if there were WMD, but you ARE also saying motives for war were correct. If the main motive for war was WMD and they did NOT exist then you should be saying the motives for going to war were WRONG. I believe that is what is termed, LOGIC.

An Egyptian Reviews Six Years Of Iraq War

Six years ago, the dynamic trio of Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld announced to a cheering neo-conservative media that Mission Accomplished and Iraq was now a free nation and America no longer had to worry about being destroyed by WMD from Saddam Hussein. Salah Hemeid, writing in Al Ahram, surveys the past six years for the people of Iraq. There was hope six years ago that getting rid of Saddam Hussein might usher in a new era of national reconciliation, peace and stability. “Sadly, the sounds and the sights of a war-torn Iraq are as much in evidence as ever,” writes Hemeid. Bombs, ambushes and kidnappings have returned with a vengeance to baghdad and other Iraq cities although they do not approach the levels of two years ago. Six years ago, George Bush promised freedom to Iraqis, but the sounds of ambulances echo through cities carrying bodies of those blown to pieces or wounded in the latest episode of violence.

The Obama announcement that American troops would withdraw within a year has been met with renewed violence by al-Qaeda and other militants. Hemeid notes the Awakening Councils which played a key role in diminishing violence are disintegrating and some Sunnis are rejoining insurgent forces. The Iraq government failed to hire Sunnis into the army and the result is more violence. The country’s rival factions have yet to resolve the conflict over power and the goodies that come with power.

“The anniversary could serve to remind Iraqis of the need to end their national political drama and, equally important, that the solution to their national crisis rests in their own hands.” No more accurate words could be written. The fault lies not in the stars but in themselves.

Iraq Never Had WMD Says British Expert

Carne Ross, who was Great Britain’s top Iraq specialist at the United Nations, insists the real truth concerning the so-called WMD have never been revealed. He told MPs who are investigating leaks by civil servants that intelligence available to the Tony Blair government made it “very clear” that Saddam Hussein did not possess weapons of mass destruction. He told the MPs the Blair government did not give him a proper chance to discuss this issue and went went right ahead into the war based on false information. Carne resigned in 2004 after giving anonymous evidence to members of parliament. “I feel very strongly that there has still not been proper accountability and scrutiny into what happened in Iraq.”

Carne wants a full inquiry in order to get at the truth. Another whistle blower, Brian Jones, former head of the nuclear, chemical and biological branch of the Minsitry of Defense’s intelligence staff, said he was “surprised” MPs did not spot flaws in the 2002 dossier that made a case for war. He claims the Blair government kept people like him away from parliament so they could proceed with their mad dash toward war over non-existent weapons.

Call Me If You Want Recipe For Disaster!!

There is one phone call that President Obama will NOT be making in the coming months. Former president George Bush said “if he wants my help he can pick up the phone. I want my president to succeed. I love my country a lot more than I love politics. I’m not going to spend my time criticising. There are plenty of critics in that arena.” Of course, this is the man who placed country above politics and allowed a mud slinging campaign that claimed a former US senator who had lost both arms and legs fighting in Vietnam was not a trustworthy person who cared about his nation. This is a man who made NO effort to reach out to Democrats after 9/11 in order to have a unified nation unlike President Franklin Roosevelt who appointed prominent Republicans to high positions in government as World War II began.

George Bush warned President Obama against relying on government to solve the economic crisis. Wait a second. Isn’t this the president who authorized massive government expenditure to help save banks and business organizations. In the world of Bush, if he supports large government expenditures, it is because he wants to support “risk takers” like the leaders of AIG or GM who fouled up their organizations.

Naturally, the reflective man from Texas has no new reflections on Iraq. He was right, critics were wrong, and one day, mark his words, they will find the ever elusive WMD.

Dick Cheney An Meaning Of Truth And Power

Vice President Dick Cheney is among the unreconstructed advocates that war in Iraq had something to do with al-Qaeda and the September 11th attack. He still believes it was necessary to invade Iraq to destroy al-Qaeda even though Saddam Hussein never allowed any al-Qaeda group to become a force in his nation. Under Saddam, there was one terrorist–his name was Saddam. But, to Dick Cheney, evidence or truth are always strangers who never knock on his door of knowledge. Joe Biden put on his gloves and slammed the vice president for misunderstanding the meaning of power. “The only value of power is the effect, the efficacy of its use. And all the power Cheney had did not result in effective outcomes.”

The history of the Bush administration has yet to be written and future historians will most likely term it the “Bush/Cheney” presidency because bumbling confused George Bush never fully comprehended his own lack of intelligence nor did he realize how his dear friend manipulated and assumed powers no vice president had ever possessed in American history. Historians have used the expression, ‘the imperial presidency” but from now on they will have to add “the imperial vice presidency.”

Ironically, both men assumed they had knowledge, but neither ever grasped how their ignorance of the Middle East or the Muslim religion made them ineffective in formulating successful policies for the region. The further tragedy is their bumbling confusion only helped to exacerbate the mistakes of the Israel government who actually thought George Bush was their friend. With friends like Bush/Cheney, Israel had no need for enemies.

Nuclear Attack By Pakistan By 2013?

A US congressional investigation into use of weapons of mass destruction presented a frightening picture of what may lie in the future of humankind. The report identifies Pakistan as the most likely candidate to use nuclear or biological weapons in some futuristic scenario. According to the bipartisan Commission on the Prevention of Mass Destruction, “unless the world community acts decisively and with great urgency, it is more likely than not that a weapon of mass destruction will be used in a terrorist attack somewhere in the world by the end of 2013.”

There is a high probability that biological or nuclear weapons will be used in the coming years, and the confusing state of conditions in Pakistan which already has nuclear weapons suggests it might be the source of such attacks. As the report notes, “were one to map terrorism and weapons of mass destruction today, all roads would intersect in Pakistan.”

Now, the question is how to deal with this reality and prevent it from happening in the future.

Bush Aplogizes For Words–Not Deeds!

George Bush has the lowest rating of any president in American history, he has left an economy that is in ruins, and the only regrets this man can express are his use of some expressions which he now says should never have been expressed! He now admits using the expressions, “Mission Accomplished” or getting Osama bin Laden, “Dead or Alive” were probably the incorrect thing to say at the time. “I regret saying some things I shouldn’t have said” because a president should “be careful what you say.” In his CNN interview, George Bush expressed no regrets for plunging the United States into a war over WMD that never existed nor did he mention his responsibility for the death of over 4,000 Americans. It is words, not deeds that are on this man’s mind because he really has no regrets over any of his actions.

It is interesting the president did not mention his use of words that characterized political opponents as less than good Americans or insisted if you did not approve of his actions it was evidence of support for terrorism. Two expressions are recalled by the president, but not a single apology for his mistakes. Who can forget the moment during his debate with John Kerry when he simply could not recall a mistake he made?

Iran Angry At US-Iraq Security Pact

The Iranian government strongly expressed its concerns over the proposed American security pact with Iraq as a threat to its security. Bush Americans invariably approach foreign policy through an American lens rather than seeking to understand how other nations interpret actions. American military bases on the border of Iran justifiably create a sense of unease in that nation just as Bush pushing for missile bases have created fear and anxiety within Russia. Iranian officials interpret the effort to maintain military bases in Iraq as a hostile action. “the frequent wicked efforts to disturb the brotherly ties between the two countries(Iran and Iraq) are to no avail and do not weaken the will of the leaders of the two nations for the expansion and deepening of mutual ties.”

Majiis Speaker Ali Larijani went on to attack American intervention in Afghanistan as designed to strengthen its control of a nation on the border of Iran. He mocked Bush for invading Iraq in search of “weapons of mass destruction” but “after years there is no evidence on the existence of weapons of mass destruction.” There will be a new president in office come January, but he will be compelled to live with the destructive legacy of George Bush.

Australian PM Charges Predecessor With Iraq Blunders

Australia’s recently elec ted prime minister, Keven Rudd, ripped into his predecessor for misleading the nation regarding the threat of Iraq to world peace. He accused John Howard of deliberately placing Australian troops at risk for listening to the words of President George Bush that WMD existed in Iraq. Rudd asked some basic questions. “Hav further terrorist attacks been preventred? No, they have not been. Has any evidence of a link between WMD and the former Iraqi regime and terrorists been found? No. Have the actions of rogue states like Iraq been moderatd? No. After five years has the humanitarian crisis in Iraq been removed. No, it has not.”

Whe House spokesperson Dana Perino, once again argued that “no one else in the world, no other government had different information and so we acted based on what was the threat that was presented to us.” The Bush administration still functions on the belief if one repeats endlessly the same idea, it eventually will be accepted as the truth. Has George Bush forgotten the UN in 2003 urged they been given additional time to check out the so-called WMD because they had yet to find evidence any such weapons existed?

Ann Coulter Please Read-Senator McCarthy Was Wrong!

Fifty-four years ago yesterday, the infamous Senator Joseph McCarthy hearings began in the Unied States Senate in which the Wisconsin Republican tried using a public hearing in order to continue his virulent anti-communist crusade. Today, modern conservatives like Ann Coulter repeatedly attempt to prove that “Fighting Joe” McCarthy’s crusade was on the right track in uncovering communists in the State Department and liberals have besmirched his fair name. During the hearings, Senator McCarthy’s bullying tactics, which even included attempting to smear the name of President Eisenhower as some sort of friend of communism, resulted in revulsion by the American people toward his variation of anti-communism.

The FBI agents who actually chased Soviet spies in the United States offer an explanation that differs widely from that of right wing Ann Coulter and her crowd of Republican smear artists. Robert J. Lamphere, who participated in virtually all FBI spy cases, told author Ronald Kessler, FBI agents were appalled that J. Edgar Hoover initially supported McCarthy. “The problem was that McCarthy lied about the information and figures,” said Lammphere. “He made charges against people that weren’t true. McCarthyism harmed the counterintelligence effort against the Soviet threat because of the revulsion it caused.”

Senator mccarthy’s ccrusade begain on February 9, 1950, when he stated “While I cannot take the time to name all of the men in the State Departmnt who have been named as members of the Communist Party and members of a spy ring, I have here in my hand a list of 205 — a list of names that were known to the secretary of state and who, nevertheless, are still working and shaping policy of the State Department.” During the following months the figure of 205 changed dramatically, going up and down.

McCarthy asked cooperation of th FBI in his anti-communist crusade, but was told by William Sullivan, who became number three man in the bureau, “We don’t have enough evidence to show there was a single Communist in the State Department.”

The legacy of Senator McCarthy’s lies and throwing around figures certainly lives on in modern day George Bush lies about weapons of mass destruction. The Ann Coulters today are just as prone as Senator McCarthy to throw around “facts” and “figures” that are lies and to accuse those who oppose their viewpoint of being “anti-American.” Unfortunately, there is as much chance of Ann Coulter admitting Bush lied abut WMD as there was of Senator McCarthy telling the American public what he was told by the FBI.
