There is increasing evidence of the growth in Xinjiang province of Muslim activists who are challenging the authority of Chinese officials. The Chinese Foreign Ministry denounced as false claims by foreign human rights advocates of anti-Muslim actions which include the destruction of mosques by the Chinese government. According to the Foreign Ministry, “the two buildings were unlawfully built structures, not mosques.” It said farmers had constructed religious buildings without obtaining necessary official permission.
There is no question groups like the Islamic Liberation Front and the Hizb ut-Tahrir are growing in power and offering Muslims the vision of a Muslim society in which the hated Han Chinese no longer enjoy power. Perhaps, it is time for China to accept and support Muslim groups that seek to have religious freedom while adhering to the laws of the nation.
