American Citizen Killed By US Forces

The Obama administration insists the death of noted militant Anwar al-Awlaki was justified on grounds that he engaged in attacks on Americans. The issue of his being an American citizen was irrelevant since once Awlaki decided to become part of a terrorist organization is was open season on him by US forces. However, two weeks later his son, 16 year old Abdulrahman al-Awlaki was also killed by drones. His family claims the boy was in the Yemen capital of Sana’a and had gone to find his father when drones sent him to his death.

OK, one can argue it is legal to kill an American citizen if he takes up arms against the country of his birth, but how does murdering a 16 year old American boy become justified? Is it now legal in America to kill the child of a terrorist? How about killing children of a convicted murderer? What about placing in jail children of a drug offender? When does this pattern of killing and killing finally conclude?

In 2009 Barack Obama said America must “reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals.” We agree. Does he agree with what he said in 2009?
