Pope Francis has conveyed to Catholics and the world his desire to be a leader who is concerned about the church and is ready to engage in the struggle to address sex issues. On June 15, he appointed Monsignor Battista Ricca to an important role in banking. The weekly newspaper l”Experesso charged that Ricca lived openly in a gay relationship with a Swiss army officer while working in the Vatican. It also claims that Ricca was in a gay bar where he was assaulted by some men. He was also caught with a teen age boy.
The Vatican is now engaged in checking the validity of these allegations. The issue is not only did Pope Francis know about these events, but why didn’t he know about these events? They are symptoms of a problem that must be addressed, sooner or later. The issue is not sexual orientation of Ricca but how does the church address gay behavior.
