Australian Muslims Fear Anti-Terrorism Laws

Australian Muslims are upset at the recent conviction of a Muslim who was accused of writing a terrorist manual. Belai Saadallah Khazaal, was convicted of assisting the spread of terrorism because he wrote a manual. Muslim leader, Kuranda Seyit, said, “there terror laws have specially maee every Muslim a potential target for arrest by police. thre have been many people who have had their homes raided and their passports confiscaqted and this is simply unconstitutional. These laws are not keeping Australia safe, but in fact terrorising Australian Muslims.”

The prosecutor argued Khazaai was urging others to engage in terrorist activities, but his defense attorney pointed out the material had actually been taken from Internet sources. The issues should be intention as well as capability. A teenager could gather material but lack any real intention of violence or be unable to carry out any threat.

The New South Wales Council for Civil Liberties raised questions as to whether “these terrorism laws allow police extreme powers to detain, question and gather evidence.” Isn’t the issue the historic one related to shouting “fire” in a crowded theater?
