In his race for the presidency, then Barack Obama promised to end abuses by the government against those who wanted the right to gain access to information and halt the reign of secrecy. A new report by Washington Post editor Leonard Downie charges the Obama administration has been more aggressive against those seeking information than any president since Richard Nixon. Imagine, George Bush is now the paragon of openess compared to Barack Obama! According to Downie, “those suspected of discussing with reporters anything that the government has classified as secret are subject to investigation, including lie detector tests and scrutiny of their telephone and email records.” New York Times correspondent David Sanger charges “this is the most closed, control-freak administration I’ve ever covered.”
This administration has given over one million people access to “Secret” documents. This administration continually leaks information that it desires to leak. This administration even resorts to the 1917 Espionage Act which has long been cited by historians as violating the rights of Americans. America has long respected the right of citizens to information. Alas, we now live in the world of secrecy. Alas, few things “secret” are really a secret.
