Barack Obama Loses In Massachusetts

The bad news is that a Republican conservative won the senatorial election in Massachusetts, the good news is it might finally get through to President Obama that he has pursued the wrong policies in his first year in office. Last January, this blog urged the president to focus on two issues-preventing a collapse of banks and financial institutions, and developing a massive program of jobs for the unemployed even if it meant a modern version of the Depression WPA. I also emphasized the need to pass new laws that would regulate financial institutions and place a higher tax burden on the wealthy of this nation. Barack Obama preferred giving the wealthy massive amounts of money and refusing to regulate banks. In fact, he selected as his main economic advisers, Larry Summers and Tim Geithner, two men who were part of the financial problem. We urged the appointment of Paul Krugman.

During the past year I constantly receive missives from Move On urging me to support the president. Move On is another part of the Obama problem. Move On did not grasp that a president needs to understand when he has lost contact with the people and groups like Move On simply reinforced Obama’s arrogance that he knew best how to solve problems. What can Obama do:

1. New legislation requiring that industries to deal with global warming must be based in America and impose tariffs on Chinese made solar panels in order to stimulate an American industry in solar panels along with turbines and other such job creating industries.
2. A massive government sponsored program for jobs. For example, an additional 100,000 nurses, 100,000 teachers, 100,000 police, plus money to restore the infrastructure of this nation.
3. Above all–WE MUST TAX THE WEALTHY AND REDISTRIBUTE THE WEALTH!! THE ONLY WAY TO PAY FOR THESE NEW PROGRAMS IS TO TAX, TAX, TAX THE WEALTHY OF THIS NATION WHO HAVE GOTTEN AWAY WITH FINANCIAL MURDER SINCE THE CLINTON AND BUSH YEARS. No more $1 billion bonus payments on Wall Street. Sorry, they can make it on a million a year.
4. Barack Obama has to cease being the smart kid in the class who believes the average American must be told what is good for her. He must learn to explain complex ideas clearly and concisely. Obama might learn some lessons in communication from Franklin D. Roosevelt. For example, in 1940, England was alone facing Nazi Germany and had run out of destroyers to guard convoys. FDR told the American people who did not wish to get involved in European wars the following story: “What is your neighbor’s house caught on fire and he came to you and asked to borrow your hose, surely, you would loan it. We are going to loan England 50 destroyers because their house is on fire.” It passed and England was saved. I assume if FDR were alive today he could explain health care reform in terms that would be understood.
