Bill Provides Aid To Female Veterans

Anong the myths propogated by the Bush administration is failure on the part of Democrats to be concerned for the lives of members of our military. Ironically, since Democrats gained control of Congress, there have finally been numerous pieces of legislation to protect the rights of veterans and a pay increase higher than that proposed by Bush. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., is proposing new legislation that addresses the needs of female veterans. The new bill arises from her numerous hearings with VA officials over the impact of war upon women. Her bill will ask for:
New assessment and treatment of women who hve suffered sexual trauma while in the armed forces.
Further study of post traumatic stress effects on women and development of new forms of treatment.
A long term study of gendeer specific health issues of female veterans.

Joy Ilem, of the Disabled American Veterans says there simply is a lack of knowledge concerning these issues and it is about time the VA began to address the needs of female veterans. She notes as many as 19% of female combat veterans say they have been sexually assaulted which places them at a higher risk for PTSD. Murray’s bill also calls for hiriing a Women Vetrans Coordinator at VA hospitals.
