Black, Colored, Negro, Nigger!

Two gym teachers in New Jersey were fired because they referred to black students as “Negroes.” If one examines the history of how black skinned folk are designated by their contemporaries, the word “Negro” was the correct word. Martin Luther King usually employed the word, Negro, and rarely used the word, black, Malcolm X would never use the word, “colored” which he considered to be an insult. Few black or Negro leaders ever used the word, Nigger,” which they considered to be the ultimate insult.Brigitte Geiger and Shaon Jones were talking in a private conversation saying, “Yea, those Negroes think they are tough. Yeah, that’s all they are, just a bunch of Negroes, Negroes.” The teachers admitted they were frustrated.

Number 1, it was a private conversation. One has the Constitutional right to speak in private and say whatever one desires to say.

Number 2, the use of Negro is part of American history and many black leaders in this country used that expression.

The issue is they spoke in an disparaging manner about students. Their right to free speech was violated. A discussion was the appropriate end result of their comments.
