President Morsi of Egypt had decided to copy how the Turkish Justice and Development party gained power over its military. They fired important generals and replaced them with men favorable to a more Muslim religious approach to government. Morsi fired Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, a power in the armed forces and told him to head off to retirement. Reason given was the recent attacks by militants in Sinai.
If the Egyptian military goes meekly into the night, it means the Muslim Brotherhood will gain complete power over government. There are no indications the MB will accept a secular approach to society. They will proceed one step at a time but the ultimate goal is clear, imposition of some form of Sharia law upon Egyptian society.
A revolt that began with high hopes for creation of a modern society appears headed into another version of clerical control. The dreams of spring have turned into the nightmare of summer.
