Sudan President Omar al-Bashir ordinarily makes the list of petty dictators who imprison and torture those who dare oppose his rule as boss man of the country. The world was shocked at a release from his office. “Today, we announce a decision to free all political prisoners and renew our commitment to all political powers about dialogue.” It went on to promise engaging in open discussions with any group that is prepared to discuss how the nation can come together and end armed conflict. This follows up on Vice President Ali Osman Taha who met with opposition leaders and pledged to cease putting people in jails and inviting them to open discussion.
Up to this point the Bashir regime has opposed dialogue. Who knows, maybe the spirit of Easter has persuaded Bashir to seek peace rather than seek war and hate.
