Can Women Be Charged With Gender Bias?

Heleln Zille, West Cape Premier in South Africa is facing charges that she displayed gender bias by having an all male Cabinet. Ms. Zille argues her original intention was to have other women in the Cabinet but her choices for positions did not work out due to unforseen circumstances. “The fact that there are no female (ministers) in the provincial cabinet, while regrettable, was assuredly not an oversight on my part.” She argues that an executive has the right to select whomever she desires for Cabinet positions.

Helen Zille has always been an advocate for human rights and gender equity. Frankly, her explanation is rather tepid and lacks merit. Surely, there are more than three women in West Cape who are qualified to serve in a Cabinet position. Helen, this is not your finest hour as a fighter for equity in life.
