Catholics Leaving Danish Church

There are only about 35,000 Catholics in Denmark and annually about two dozen might leave the church for one reason or another, but in the past few weeks there has been a dramatic rise in the number who simply can not take anymore stories of sexual abuse by priests. According to Father Niels Engelbrecht, “members have left because they are upset by the current situation and don’t wish to be identified with it.” It is estimated about 70-90 already have left within the past few months. The numbers are small, the reasons are weighty. Unless Pope Benedict XVI assumes a pro-active role in dealing with sexual abuse, Denmark might be the symptom of a greater issue that impacts millions.
