Cease Fire Ceases

The United Nations brokered cease fire in Syria has been broken with government artillery blasting away at the city of Homs. It is reported that shell fire began when some people were holding a funeral and the Syrian government decided to continue its policy of fostering funerals. In a rare vote, the UN Security Council unanimously voted–including Russia and China–to send 30 unarmed observers to Syria in  order to figure out how to end the violence which has gone on for over a year.

The UN instructed both government and militants to “cease all armed violence in all forms.”  Kofi Annan worked for weeks to persuade President Bashar als-Assad to end military action, got a promise and then got reality. Assad has reached the point where he can not go back and apparently does not want to go forward. In the end violence will triumph.
