The Chinese government announced all athletes will be forbidden to bring their own food to the Olympics since everyone will only be allowed to eat food made by the Chinese. “Foods are banned mainly out of safety concerns and beverages are not allowed in the Olympic Village to protect sponsors’ rights.” Ziang Ping said the issue of medicines is more complicated and anyone requiring medicine will have their needs dealt with on a one-to-once basis. His comments came after reports American athletes wanted to prepare their own food. The Chinese argue it is preferable if all athletes ate together and expressed concern Americans might be eating as a national group rather than mixing with athletes from other nations.
Sometimes, the Chinese have a propensity of taking a simple issue and transforming it into a world shaking event. If the goal is having athletes from all over the world meet and eat together, why not make that point. But, to worry about a group of athletes who simply want to eat their own food is a bit of much ado about nothing. How about relaxing and just enjoying the games?
