Chuck Hagel, former combat soldier in the Vietnam war, and US senator is under attack from many senators because he is not sufficiently supportive of the Israel government. It is news to me that American senators are not evaluated on the basis of whether they support a foreign government. A major complaint against him is a remark he once made about the “Jewish lobby.” Senator McCain is correct in being critical of that remark because Hagel should have said, “Israel lobby.”
Hagel once stated very clearly the following: “I’m not an Israel senator. I’m a United States senator. I support Israel, but my first interest is I take an oath of office to the Constitution of the United States, not to a president, not to a party, not to Israel. If I go run for Senate in Israel, I’ll do that.”
Israel needs friends like Hagel who speak bluntly about reality. Hagel understands that it is in the best interests of Israel to work for peace with Palestinians, with the nation of Turkey and other Muslim countries. Under Prime Minister Netanyahu Israel has become the enemy of just about every nation in the world. Chuck Hagel will work to assist Israel once again become part of the world and to live in peace with all nations.
