Shortly after the first use of atomic bomb weapons in World War II, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists unveiled a Doomsday clock. The assumption was eventual mass use of atomic weapons would result in the annihilation of the human race. Scientists set the clock at 11:2 p.m. As the years passed, gradually the clock moved closer and closer to the witching hour when all on earth would be gone. Ironically, during the Cold War the concept of “Mutual Destruction” made both sides careful about pushing the atomic bomb button.
Now, in light of global warming(sorry, I forgot according to Republican belief nothing has changed) fear of biological weapons and growing possibilities that rogue nations could posses an atomic bomb, the Bulletin has decided to move hands on the clock to 11:55 p.m.
This is one midnight we all hope will not strike.
