The French government is attempting to block sending a bill passed by the lower house of parliament which would make criminal denying the genocide against Armenians that was committed in 1915 under the Ottoman empire. This bill is an incorrect as those in Turkey which make criminal stating there was a genocide against Armenians. In either case, it is not the task of government to tell anyone what to believe about history. Historians have a right to conduct their research and publish their conclusions. If anyone does not agree with a statement that a genocide occurred or a statement that no such event ever happened, the solution is to head to the nearest library and conduct research.
Both Turkey and French legislators who attempt to decide the historical past violate the basic tenets of academic freedom and the right of free speech.
