Days Of Sorrow In Iran

Those who live outside of Iran can only shake our heads in disbelief and sadness when still another Iranian who speaks for truth and social justice is arrested, placed in a court in which some old men with beards, decide that anyone who dares to oppose their views on life, is guilty of some heinous crime such as speaking the truth. Shiva Nazar Ahari, a fighter for human rights in Iran and founder of the Committee for Human Rights Reporters, was arrested last December on her way to attend the funeral of the Grand Ayatollah Ali Montazeri, who spoke openly about his concern for the abrogation of free speech in his society. There was a what passed for a trial and Ms. Ahari was convicted of violating, moharebeh, which means she did something to undermine the Iranian government. Obviously, speaking the truth violates the government of Iran’s edicts on free speech. She apparently did not grasp in the regime of President Ahmadinejad, free speech means one is free to agree with him.

She was fined $500 in lieu of a whipping, but sentenced to six years in jail. Ah, the beloved country of Iran, we weep for you and all those who stand up for freedom.
