Seventy years ago this month, about 12,000 Jews who had fled to France from other countries were rounded up and placed in the Winter Velodrome stadium prior to their departure to death at Auschwitz. No, they were not arrested by the Gestapo. They were arrested and treated with brutality and indifference by the French police. During World War II, the behavior of French police was more alike than different from the behavior of German police.
French President Francois Hollande apologized for the action of French authorities, not only in rounding up these Jews, but in collaborating in the death of 75,000 Jews from France. There is no question thousands of decent French fought in the Resistance, but many more collaborated with Nazis authorities.
Unfortunately, today all too many Muslims in France continue the song of hate toward Jews. Hate a Jew today and you hate a Muslim tomorrow.
