Retired General Barry McCaffrey who currently teaches at West Point issued a somber and pessimistic prediction concerning what awaits American soldiers in Afghanistan. The dire forecast came in his annual review of political and security issues confronting the nation. “What I want to do is signal that this thing is going to be a $5 billion to $10 billion a month and 300 to 500 killed and wounded a month by next summer. That;s what we should expect. And that’s light casualties.” Even as he wrote, another four American soldiers died due to IEDs. His somber comments are not like those spoken in the halls of Congress nor on Television shows like those of Bill O’Reilly or Glen Beck. Unfortunately, the heroes of the media will never be walking down a road in Afghanistan. After all, they are no different than Dick Cheney and George Bush who made certain not to witness combat during the Vietnam war.
It is about time, President Obama spoke in honest tones about the war in Afghanistan. Enough of boasts and promises to capture “every terrorist.” It is time for honesty. George Bush never stopped lying to the American people and we live with the result of his lies.
