Civil war rages in Syria and death and destruction threaten to send this unfortunate nation backward, economically and politically. Cities are being destroyed, the infrastructure is being wrecked, thousands are dead and untold thousands are wounded or have fled the country. Bashar Assad is a dictator who will not surrender power in any form of voluntary decision. He will finally flee to save his life and that of his family.
Perhaps, it is time to pull a “Switzerland.” Step one in a solution to the dilemma of Syria in which there is an Alawite minority and Christians who fear for their lives at the prospect of a Muslim government. Step two is establishing enclaves for Alawites and Christians who would be given control of local government. Hopefully, after a decade of peace and cooperation, the enclaves would feel comfortable becoming part of a united Syria.
