Prior to civil rights legislation of the fifties and sixties it was legal in southern states to deny people the right to vote unless they paid a poll tax. The American nation is committed to the principle that its citizens have a right to vote. Unfortunately, the Republican controlled state legislature of Pennsylvania has a differnt perspective on voting rights. It passed a law requiring voters to have a state issued photo ID, either a driver’s license of passport, in order to vote. The law was intended to halt voter fraud.
There have only been four cases of voter fraud in Pennsylvania during the past decade. The law is designed to prevent poor people, city dwellers who do not vote, and the elderly from voting. Pensylvania Republican house leader on seeing the law passed boasted tha it ‘is going to allow Governor Romney to win the state.”
