There are rallies being held throughout America protesting the murder of Trayvon Martin, and even more the acquittal of George Zimmerman, the killer. Fortunately, even some conservative Republicans are raising questions concerning how an armed man shot a teenage boy and got away with the killing. Senator John McCain added his name to those urging rethinking of the Stand Your Ground law. “I can also see that the ‘stand your ground’ law may be something that needs to be reviewed by the Florida legislature or any other legislature that has passed such legislation.” The judge in giving instructions to the jury cited this law as a factor in making a decision.
Trayvon is dead. No protest will bring him back to life. His death is symbolic of the fear and hysteria which has taken over this nation. President Obama expressed his concern over the verdict, but his policies of fear and hysteria simply add to the thinking that Americans are in danger of –something. Perhaps, he could reduce this thinking by reviewing policies that simply convey the feeling of looming doom.
