Contradictory statements recently emerged from Muslim clerics in Malaysia and in Turkey concerning the rich to protest against a government. The National Fatwa Committee of Malaysia made clear that Muslims could not participate in demonstrations against a government. “Rioting, causing disturbances and damaging public property are all forbidden by Islam. This also applies to an intention to topple an elected government.”
On the other hand, Turkey’s Directorate of Religious Affairs Fatwa Board holds a contrary view regarding demonstrations. It makes clear that Muslims can protest against an elected government. But, adds that any intention to “incite society to malice is not lawful in Islam.” I wonder if this applies to Muslims protesting against the Israel government. I also wonder if this means the Muslim Brotherhood had no right to protest against the Mubarak government in Egypt??
