Education: A Privilege, Not A Right in Lithuania

The Lithuanian government announced a new “reform” of higher education. From now on, students will have to pay for it. According to a government spokesperson: “I hope that the higher fees for education will increase the motivation of students and their responsibility as well.” Huh. If you increase costs of going to college fewer poor children can attend. That is Education 101. Why is it that politicians always insist students should be “motivated?” How about this: no member of Parliament will be paid unless they display sufficient motivation to pass legislation that benefits the people of Lithuania.
