The Egyptian newspaper, al-Ahram, reports Egyptian government sadness at what they regard as Israel’s hesitancy in working toward resolution of problems in the Middle East. Foreign Minister Abul Geit said: “we are going to Israel toshow the Arab determination to extend their hand in peace in accordance with the Arab Peace Initiative.” There is feeling among Egyptian diplomats that Israel will not reciprocate that feeling.
For years, Israel complained about the failure of Arab leaders to engage in serious discussions regarding the conflict with Palestinians. For the first time in years, Arab leaders are ready to negotiate and talk. Discussions in themselves don’t necessarily result in resolution of problems, but they are the necessary initial step which is so vital. Israel is allowing past failures to influence their current behavior. At some point, they must surrender anger at what happened before in order to achieve what might be attained today.
