Prime Minister David Cameron is in Burma–or Myanmar, depending on what is your philosophical belief–where he is visiting government officials and, naturally, made the obligatory visit to human rights activist, Aung San Suu Kyi. Although there is evidence in the form of elections which resulted in victories for Ms. Kyi and her followers, the British prime minister insisted that he believes the policy toward sanctions should be, “suspend them now, not lift them.”
OK, President Thein has not gone all the way and freed political prisoners, but he has taken direct steps to jar open prison doors and allow some to depart. The Burmese government needs support from the western world in order to further the process of democracy. End sanctions NOW and support those in Burma who work for peace and democracy.
