Economic sanctions were imposed on the military regime which ruled Myanmar for over twenty years, but the infamous General Than Shwe is now gone and a new leader is offering evidence that a new direction is being born in the country. President Thein Sein allowed free elections to parliament and famous human rights activist Aung San Suu Kyi won a seat in the legislative body along with other candidates from her party.
It is time for the United States to end economic sanctions and demonstrate support for efforts by President Sein to turn a new page in his country’s history. If the US continues its program of refusing to acknowledge changes in Burma the only result will be a turn toward China which is ready to back any government that allows it to invest in their nation.
The USA must take a gamble on democracy.
