Erdogan Sends In The Troops

Prime Minister Recep Erdogan has been in office for over ten years and each year has witnessed further growth in his power. He compelled army generals to obey his dictates, he forced judges to cater to his whims, and he has gained control of the legislature. Thousands of people challenged his right to  build a mall and this sent him into a frenzy of anger. He sent hundreds of riot police into Istanbul’s Taksim Square and they proceeded to beat up those protesting the mall. It is reported that dozens of lawyers were arrested for the crime of representing the interests of those who were arrested. Lawyer Fatima Elif Koru told the media that “we were just gathering to make a press statement about Gezi Park and then the police attacked. It was very brutal. Now 49 lawyers are in custody and many are injured.”

Ironically, the police raised a banner which had the picture of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey. A few days ago, Prime Minister Erdogan denounced Ataturk because  he wanted to create a modern secular society and was rather a heavy drinker of alcohol. Oh, Erdogan wants to ban the sale of alcohol.

At least President Gul is standing with the protesters.
