Armenian women in Turkey are attempting to establish shelters for women who are victims of domestic abuse, but they are encountering a wall of disbelief among men that any of them would actually harm their wives of daughters. A group of females from the Armenian Women’s Platform went to discuss this issue with Patriarch Mesrop II and were told, “we could gather under the Patriarch’s roof if necessary,” but he did not want women run shelters. Kayus Calikman wants an Armenian run women shelter and does not want Armenian women to go to shelters run by other groups.
She projects a shelter where women learn to cook and earn money by selling their food. “Their children will be with them after school.”She also promised to have trained psychologists available to assist women with serious emotional issues. It is clear establishing a shelter run by Armenian women for Armenian women somehow threatens male masculinity.
