Saudi Arabia is a firm ally of the United States in the war against terrorism. Of course, most of the men who were terrorists on 9/11 came from that country, but no one is perfect. In the democratic society of Saudi Arabia, women definitely know their place when it comes to car–sit in the back seat and shut up. A new Saudi female group dubbed, Women2Drive intends to use Facebook as part of a campaign to change laws in their nation so women can drive a car. Novelist Badriya al-Bishir, notes: “It seems that women who are the main victims of suppression, will carry the banner of change in Saudi society.” Ironically, there is no law in Saudi Arabia which makes illegal a woman driving a car, but as far as religious leaders go, they will beat the hell out of any woman who dares get behind the wheel of a moving vehicle.
I wonder, is it illegal for women to sit alone in a car and not drive? Why don’t thousands of women simply sit in the front seat pretending to drive. Their husbands can make supper tonight. It’s worth a shot!
