Israel troops clashed with Hamas militants and there were deaths on both sides. During the past ten years the Israel government has continually pursued policies that do not lead to peace. The current approach is pretending Hamas does not exist, and its control over Gaza will be hampered by denying the area opportunity to develop its economy.
Perhaps, if Israel tried a reverse strategy it might result in a different outcome. What if Israel cooperated with Hamas (without demanding any statement from Hamas to abandon its goal of eliminating Israel) and got Gaza booming. People would have jobs, they would seek a better life, and maybe their personal goals would eventually take precedence over ideological ones. Yes, it’s a gamble, but can it be any worse than current policies which offer no hope of ending violence?
