The area around the French city of Calais has long been a center of immigrants who are trying to enter either France or the European Union. The French government unleashed the force of the police to destroy makeshift tents and huts called “The Jungle” in an effort to drive migrants from the area. There are reported thousands of migrants from such diverse areas as Iraq, Afghans, Palestinians, etc.. and the French effort aims at ending their presence. Most probably, there has been a decline in the number of migrants due to the world-wide economic crisis.
The French government wavers from telling migrants about their rights to remain in the area to driving them out or offering repatriation to their country of origin. We can expect further such efforts all over Europe as the economic crisis expands.
