Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is retiring after years of being in that position which compelled his oversight of two wars. Of course, he is not the father of those wars, that distinction belongs to George Bush, Dick Cheney and Don Rumsfeld. The dynamic trio began a war in Afghanistan and rather than cleaning up the mess by ensuring a stable government and armed force was in place, the dynamic trio decided to initiate a war about WMD that never existed. Robert Gates and Barack Obama inherited the disaster of those wars and now Republicans insist the wars are the fault of “Democrats.” During his tenure as Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates has composed 3400 letters of condolence to parents and wives and relatives of those who died. He says not a letter was written without tears coming to his eyes.
On a recent trip to Afghanistan he told troops in the 101st Airborne Division, “Probably more than anyone, other than the president, I am responsible for you being here. I’m the guy that signed the deployment orders that sent you here, and that has weighed on me every day that I have had this job.” He has repeatedly told the president and the nation, “I’ve got a military that is exhausted. Let’s just flinish the war we’re in and keep focused on that instead of signing up for other wars of choice.”
The sad aspect of these wars is lack of such feeling among the dynamic trio of Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld who began the killing and now act as though the entire episode is one caused by Democrats. As for Tea Party members who cheered our troops going into battle, and now blast the “Obama war” what can one say other than these creatures are hypocrites.
