The Olympic committee is furious at passage in Putin Land of a new anti-gay law that makes it a criminal act to speak out in favor of gay rights. The law bans “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations” and makes illegal holding gay rallies. The IOC demanded that Russian authorities explain how this law will impact athletes during the February Olympics to be held next year in Russia. C.K.Wu, an IOC board member ants to know if this law will be applied to Olympic athletes. “What are you Russians going to do?” He told reporters the IOC is “serious and we are not joking” about this law which could result in arrest of Olympic athletes.
Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said his government would not back down under political pressure. The issue is clear. The Olympic committee can not expose athletes to the prospect of arrest because they speak their minds. The solution is clear-no enforcement of this law at the Olympics or no Olympics in Russia!
