News about a major change in American military operations circulated around the world and it was expressed in fewer than 140 characters. Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, tweeted to members of the military: “Stand by what I said: Allowing homosexuals to serve openly is the right thing to do. Comes down to integrity.” Yes, the message is brief, but why does expressing support for human rights require elaborate discussions? As Mullen told members of Congress a few days ago: “No matter how I look at the issue, I cannot escape being troubled by the fact that we have in place a policy which forces young men and women to lie about what they do in order to defend their fellow citizens.” That is the bottom line and its truth is so evident, only the bigoted can ignore it.
Among the following responses to the tweet were:
“thank you for your integrity,” wrote Annq13
“Let’s hold them to this,” matropolis
“big step forward,” lilbodancer
As citizens of the United States of America we must all apologize to those brave gays and lesbians who died for this country despite being treated as lepers!!
