Our society sends young men and women into war in areas of the world that should not witness the presence of American soldiers, but to General Dana Pittard it is the fault of those forced to experience horror to “act like an adult” and cease feeling sorry for oneself. On a recent blog entry, he noted: “I have come to the conclusion that suicide is an absolutely selfish act. I am personally fed up with soldiers who are choosing to take their own lives so that others can clean up their mess.”
After getting blasted by hundreds for his insensitive comment, the general now says he is sorry for not being aware of Army regulations dealing with suicide. Army regulations have nothing to do with the issue. The issue is that people like General Pittard sent American youth into harm’s way for no intelligent reason. How about apologizing for failure of American military leaders to resign their positions and going before the American people in order to tell them the truth!
