The ongoing saga of Pakistan is among the most difficult issues confronting American political and military leaders. Pakistan’s notorious Interservices Intelligence -ISI– created the Taliban and protects it even though what is protects kills its own soldiers. A Taliban militant group yesterday ambushed a Pakistan military convoy and murdered seven soldiers. Of course, if US soldiers killed these Taliban killers, the Pakistan army would be furious.
Prime Minister Yusaf Raza Gilani appointed a new head of the ISI. General Zaheer-ul-Islam will replace General Pasha who constantly clashed with American military leaders. Probably there will be no changes in ISI direction. But, who knows, perhaps the ISI might decide to protect its own soldiers against its proteges who kill them?
