Helen Thomas, A Fond Farewell!

Helen Thomas has been a fixture during most of my 79 years of life, always present at White House press conferences, always posing interesting questions, never fearing the power of an administration. Last week she attended a meeting on Jewish Heritage month and when asked her views on the Israel-Palestine conflict, snarled back with, “tell them to get the Hell out of Palestine,” a remark that is perfectly valid to make. But, she went on as rage assumed control of her heart with, “remember, these people are occupied, it’s their land, not Germany, not Poland. They (Jews) can go home, {Poland, Germany, and America, and everywhere else.” The Hearst corporation announced her “retirement,” immediately. Ms.Thomas followed up with an apology for her remarks and emphasized, “peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance.”

Helen Thomas was a pioneer in the media because she was probably the first woman to be recognized as an important reporter on the White House beat. She had every right to tell Israelis to go to Hell or anywhere else, but to infer there were no Jews in Palestine and Jews lived in Poland or Germany or America was not only slanderous, but factually incorrect. A reporter should check her facts before speaking nonsense.
