Hope In Tunisia

Tunisia once was a colony of France which resulted in many students attending college in France. Thus, a high percent of those with a college education received a western education. The “Arab Spring” began in Tunisia and its dictator was among the initial thug leaders to be driven from power. The first free election led to the triumph of the moderate Islamist Ennahda party. Unfortunately, more fundamentalist groups also emerged seeking imposition of sharia law on a population which did not seek life under such conditions. During the past few months, fundamentalists have murdered prominent secular leaders resulting in anger toward the Ennahda party. Tensions between secular forces and the government have increased.

Yesterday, the UGTT trade union intervened to persuade Ennahda to agree there was need for a coalition government if radical violent groups were to be weakened. Hopefully, there is a new Arab Spring which leads to democracy.
