General Peter Pace, former head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff says there were mistakes in the invasion of Iraq. “One of the mistakes I made in my assumption going in was that the Iraqi people and the iraqi army would welcome liberation, that the iraqi people would welcome liberation… If I knew the Iraqi army was not going to be available I probably would have made a different recommendation about the total size force going in.” He stands by the invasion of Iraq as the right decision.
There is something confusing about Pace’s statement. The Iraqi army did not disintegrate, it was disbanded by the United States. If we wanted it available all we had to do was keep the army intact. I suspect what he “got wrong” was making an unintelligible statement about the invasion of Iraq. It simply does not stand up to the reality of what happened.
