Indonesia Offers Troops for Darfur

Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim nation, but it has generally been ignored in dealing with issues related to Muslims. it contributed 1000 soldiers to help neutralize Lebanon’s border with Israel and now it is offering to send troops to help stabilize Darfur. The UN voted this week to establish a 26,000 force that would replace 7,000 UN troops currently in Darfur.

The United States continually fails to take advantage of Muslim nations such as Indonesia or Egypt in securing troops for areas in which Muslims are in conflict. Imagine if Egyptian or Indonesian troops had entered Baghdad four years ago, would the ensuing violent conflict have emerged? It is safer asking Muslim nations to supply armed forces than sending in western troops who invariably become the focus of hatred.
