The Bush legacy regarding American policy towards Iran is among the most bungled in diplomatic history. George Bush repeatedly turned down opportunities to establish positive relations with Iran which shared America dislike of the Taliban. Times have changed and President Obama has reached out to Iran and offered the hand of friendship. “The Iranian nation,” said President Ahmadinejad, “welcomes a hand extended to it should it really and truly be based on honesty, justice and respect. But if, God forbid, the extended hand has an honest appearance but contains no honesty in content, it will meet the same response the Iranian nation gave to Mr. Bush.”
It is time for a new beginning and President Obama might begin the new path by having America apologize to the people of Iran for the CIA overthrow of the moderate Mossadegh government in the 1950s. It would be welcome in Iran.
