Iranian Moderate Gains New Leadership Positions

Hashemi Rafsanji, former president of Iran who attempted while in office to support moderate reforms, was elected to the Academy of Elders and will also serve on the Expediency Council. Rasfanji currently is a member of the Guardian Council which decides who can run for Parliament. He recently commented regarding American threats towards Iran that “we should not let ourselves be provoked and give an excuse for the enemy.”

Bush sees what he desires to see in Iran and ignores other signs indicating Iranian leaders do not share one view of how to proceed. Rafsanji led a reform movement which was unable to significantly shift the religious leadership to move forward, but he is not a supporter of Ahmadinejad nor of the president’s wild statements. The placement of Rafsanji into several leadership positions indicates moderate elements in the Iranian hierarchy wish to proceed with caution.
